About the Engagement
Together with ENLACE, the Dr. Otto and Margarete Graber Foundation is supporting the construction of 30 Eco-stoves in the communities of Matala, Las Mananitas, and Los Riyitos in El Salvador. El Salvador is the second most deforested country in the western hemisphere. Deforestation occurs for a variety of reasons:
On the one hand, wood as a material offers a lucrative business, on the other hand, the agricultural industry needs the cleared areas for its production. In addition, the population, particularly in rural regions, needs firewood to prepare hot meals, usually on an open fire.
All of this contributes to further deforestation and thus to soil erosion. In addition, cooking on open fires poses a health risk for those affected. The constant inhalation of toxic fumes and smoke leads to serious respiratory diseases.
